Feeding and watering sheep and goats
FEED:
The sheep and goats get fed when the horses get fed .... in the morning and evening. In the evening, it is best to feed the sheep and goats ahead of everyone else that way we get them in their stall and out of the way! Please make sure to give the sheep her food and not the goats since goat food could be dangerous for her.
The containers for their feed is in the tool/horse shower room and is to the right just as you step into the room. Clear containers on wheels with black tops (same as dog containers). The label lets you know which container is which but just in case the labels have come off due to the weather, the closest container is the goat feed, then the duck feed, then the sheep feed. As a second verification of containers, the goat feed container has a large teal scoop (like the horses).
For the sheep feed, fill the small purple scoop just a little over the handle so more than what the mini horses get. For the goats, fill the teal scoop about 75% and grab the measuring cup in the same container.
Here is the order of the stalls before we start feeding..... the 1st stall is the ducks, the next 2 stalls are the goats, the next stall is a stall I use for mini's, the next stall is the sheep stall and has a red hay feeder in it.
With the sheep and goat feed in your hands, go to the sheep stall first ***** and the sheep will follow you so don't let her bump you and knock you to the ground **** and then open her stall and stay out of the way as she will go in. Then go in behind her unless you can reach that big turquoise container to put her food in .... if you go in, be aware that she will circle to the left so just stay near the door til she does her thing then you can pour the food in her turqoise container.
Then close her door and go back to goat stall and let them in. Skip the first red double food container and go to the next one on the right..... only put food in one side (closest) since furthest should be dirty since nobody eats from that side. Dip measuring cup into the large teal scoop and fill measuring cup to 75% and pour into the red food bowl just mentioned. After this, repeat same thing and put into each of the 2 red containers on back wall.
After walking out of the goat stall, if it is summertime, please plug fan into socket for sheep stall. Unplug in morning when you put her out.
WATER:
As for goats, there is a dark green bucket in their stall that only has to be filled about once a week.
The sheep's water is in the corner near the front so check and see if she needs water. I let it get pretty low then dump and rinse it before I refill it.
HAY:
Both goats and sheep have a hay feeder in their stalls. This is for COASTAL HAY ONLY!!!!! NOT ALFALFA.... that can KILL them if they eat too much!
The coastal hay will be in the 2nd to last stall and will just be 1 bale. The last stall door has the alfalfa in it and usually has several bales in there!
LET OUT OF STALL:
Let the goats and sheep out of the stall in the morning after they have been fed AND after horses have cleaned up any excess alfalfa from the donkey/mini .... rather that be in the pasture straight out back or if I fed them in the hallway due to rain. When you let them out, use the chain on both their stalls to wrap around post to keep horses from opening their stall and eating hay!
